How Shopify versions work

Shopify's APIs are versioned by date. Every quarter a new stable version ships at 17:00 UTC on the first day of January, April, July or October, named YYYY-MM. Each stable version is supported for at least 12 months, and consecutive versions overlap for at least nine. The same day, the release candidate for the next quarter appears so you can test what is coming.

When a version leaves support it does not stop at once. In Shopify's own table, each version stays accessible until the 16th of the month a year after release, at 15:00 UTC. From then on, a request that names that version is answered by the oldest version still accessible. The calendar above applies that pattern to every quarter, so it stays correct without a manual update.

To see which version really answered, read the response header:

curl -s -o /dev/null -D - \
  -H "X-Shopify-Access-Token: $TOKEN" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{"query":"{ shop { name } }"}' \
  https://your-store.myshopify.com/admin/api/2026-07/graphql.json \
  | grep -i x-shopify-api-version

If the header and the version in your URL differ, you have fallen forward. Two more dates are worth knowing: Shopify CLI refuses to deploy UI extensions that target a version older than 12 months, and public apps that keep calling unsupported resources can be delisted from the App Store.

Questions, answered

How often does Shopify release a new API version?

Every three months. A new version ships at 5pm UTC on the first day of January, April, July and October, and it is named after its release month, like 2026-10. The release candidate for the next quarter comes out the same day.

How long is a Shopify API version supported?

At least 12 months from its release, and two versions in a row overlap for at least nine months. In practice that means you have about a year to move off a version, and four stable versions are supported at any time.

What happens when my version is no longer supported?

Shopify still answers it for a short time. In its version table, a version stays accessible until the 16th of the month a year after release. After that, a request that names it gets the oldest version that is still accessible instead, so your code runs against a newer API than you tested.

How do I see which version answered my request?

Read the X-Shopify-API-Version response header. If it is not the version in your URL, your version has fallen forward. Webhooks carry an X-Shopify-Api-Version header too, and the version they use is set in your app configuration.

Does this apply to the Storefront API and webhooks?

Yes. The GraphQL Admin API, Storefront API, Customer Account API, Partner API, Payments Apps API, Function APIs and webhooks all use the same quarterly versions. Liquid, the Ajax API and OAuth endpoints are not versioned. Shopify CLI also blocks deploys of UI extensions that target a version more than 12 months old.

Is the calendar hard coded?

No. It is computed from the rule Shopify documents, using your device's clock, so it moves forward on its own. I checked the rule and the current table on shopify.dev on October 5, 2026. If Shopify changes the rule, their page wins.
